sad, greensad

Morning follows

Spent last night with dustraven and trystan_laryssa. Loren was over, too. Everybody who knew Figment and his wife is generally in shock. She was about RC's age or so, so she would have been under 30. It was very unexpected.

I brought my laptop Thalia with me, but I wound up not doing anything with her at all other than introducing her to everyone. RC was too zonked to do any real plug-and-play fun. He said that he's a strictly wiring guy; I'm the Serious Geek. I got a gander at his network topology, and suggested that the broadband router might actually be able to be used to route without the broadband (equipment budget is a problematical thing) -- if it can't, maybe I can scare up a spare switch from somewhere.

I'm going to e-mail the monitor boss and the office scheduling lady to let them know what happened with Figment's wife, because if he's in as much shock as trystan_laryssa and I are sure he's in, he may not have been able to assemble himself coherently enough to even call in.

I'm feeling a little shocky myself, in a large part from ministerial reaction. My vocation is something that pops up every time I'm faced with someone in need of the sort of shoulder that a cleric can provide. I'm numb, and the words are not coming out very well. I'm sitting here in the cafeteria at work, I have to go in and start setting up for my shift in five minutes, and I just want to crawl back into my own comfortable bed at home (RC's son the Mad Scientist's bed/floor, my crash space last night, is cozy enough, but not mine) and cry, call Darkside (one of the few people I go to for comfort when my clerical duties cause distress), and go to sleep.

Fun With Security Systems

OK, great minds. Our heroine has just been presented with a new security system (on the house where she will now be living), and has only been told, "Remember, you’re always going to have to disarm everything before unlocking it," and, "Three bad tries and it calls the security company even if you do get it right after that."

She has been offered the manual to read, and has declined. (Heh, heh.)

What delightfully embarrassing mishaps can ensue with this new gadget? Keep in mind that this is a teenage kid, and her parents (her mother in particular) are the ones in charge of doing things with this security system, and the only command she's learned so far is the code she has to put in before unlocking the door from the outside.
