So a geek with a little bit of spare time wrote a script for removing all smilies in this fashion: ^_^ and replacing them with the traditional sideways smilies like :).
































It's called "the caret peeler".



The pun suggested itself to me back in 1997 or so, during the height of my correspondence with boojum, but I couldn't think of a good place to apply it, so I had to wait until the smilies in question came into common use.
