Leaving aside for the moment the fact that I wasn't thinking about the cat when I got dressed in the morning, I went for an explanation that was more global, and more topical to small boys, one that didn't include complex explanations of the gothic fashion sensibility.
"I like it. It's good for hiding in dark places ... like a ninja!"
This developed into a discussion of how to hide one's glow-in-the-dark-pale skin.
