When I was small, I could not abide a certain song. I believe the title might be "Over the Hills and Far Away". Mother Duck's little ducklings go out, over the hills and far away, but when she quacks for them to come home, one less than went out come back. Eventually only one goes out, and one comes back. So Sad Mother Duck goes out after them, over the hills and far away, and quacks, and lo and behold, she's re-united with her ducklings!
I was the kind of child who would scare myself by thinking about the concept of infinite space and time. I knew that the song was a metaphor for death. The song disturbed me, and disturbed me very much, and the fact that Mother Duck was re-united with her ducklings at the end of it did nothing to change my opinion of it. Clearly, Mother Duck was dead as well.
I wish I could remember how old I was at this point in time. I know I must have been fairly small.
