Before the dawn.

Today I have a little better handle on what I'm trying to do. I'm pretty sure I know where I did things. Pretty sure.

Going through the queries, trying to figure out where the things fall out. I have the idea about when it happens, and I know what field, and now I think I know what query.

Wait. When did I do that thing with the things?

nz ftw. (null-to-zero, in this case; New Zealand is also a nice place, but not the thing making my work possible at the moment.)

http://rf-web.tamu.edu/security/secguide/V1comput/Social.htm looks like a good resource. Learn it, know it, love it. Know your IT people, if at all possible. Build a good relationship with them. You can verify and be polite at the same time; a good IT person will recognize the need to try and defeat possible social engineering attempts.

Someone asking you for your password is a red flag. I'm actually more alarmed by the thought of someone asking for someone else's password than I am by some activities on the "how to tell if your SO is abusive" lists.

If someone needs to monkey with your account, they'll have an admin login; they can probably even reset your password and tell you your new password. If they need to be in your account, logged in as you, and have the authority to reset your password, have them reset your password in preference to giving them your own password. People's password conventions are very personal, and can give someone unethical insight into what your password on other accounts is likely to be, especially if you are like a lot of people and use the same or similar password on a lot of unrelated accounts.

Opening lines to e-mails that have made me crack up laughing today:

"He came from $MONTH_TYPE_SURVEY."

My inner narrator read it in the same tone/voice as you'd read "It Came from the Swamp".

Client visit today. Best part of client visit: client lunch leftovers. Worst part of the client visit: people being insane.

A silly, but useful, measurement of pay: Boxes of Girl Scout Cookies per Hour.

When the same piece of information is in somewhere three times, take the max or min; it'll be the same if it's ... oh, *facepalm*. Which is true if it's the same, but for the application I'm thinking of, it's not. *facepalm* 'k.

OK, client visit not bad. Brain abruptly going no-worky in the middle of work? Bad. Writers, see the e-mail list. If you're not on it, get to http://groups.yahoo.com/group/freshstartwriters/ pronto. And identify yourselves so I know who you are so I can add you. Friends-of-writers-but-not-part-of-the-group, this doesn't directly affect you.

I broke myrrhianna's brain last night. Somehow, we got onto the topic of the amazing range of human female vaginal elasticity, from the women who have like zero to the women who are streeeeeeeetchy. I said something about possessing elasticity and being glad of it, holding up my hand in a clenched fist of victory. Myrrh's brain broke.

Gone away, gone ahead,
Echoes roll unanswered.
Empty, open, dusty, dead.
Why have all the Weyrfolk fled?

Where have dragons gone together
Leaving weyrs to wind and weather,
Setting herdbeasts free of tether;
Gone, our safeguards, gone, but whither?

Have they flown to some new weyr
Where cruel Threads some others fear?
Are they worlds away from here?
Why, oh why the empty weyr?
